The ‘Special’ stands for oil injection on the two-stroke engine with front disc brakes. The engine also had slightly more horsepower, given its ‘Helmholtz resonator’ exhaust design. The car was purchased in the late 1990s from Pete and Jeannie Carson. It was picked up by Tom and his son Luke in Grand Junction, Colorado. They drove a Ford Aerostar van through the mountains and named the pass heading west toward Vail, ‘Vail HELL,’ as the Aerostar van barely made it over the mountain pass! The car has been repainted and the engine and transmission rebuilt. It is currently used as a daily driver, and for Tom’s dog Dakota, a lounging place! It was also featured on the cover of NINES’s Magazine with Paul Ellis of Des Moines, Iowa sleeping in the back during the fall 2017 Saab Stampede to Sturgis.
